Cultural Change

It is the role of leaders to create the environment for success...

Culture represents ‘the way we do things around here’ based on a shared set of values, beliefs, customs and practices. These represent your basic tenets or convictions that you hold to be true, providing a guiding philosophy. Culture is the very glue that holds everything together, for a great strategy that is not anchored by a strong philosophy is doomed to struggle. But you have to be ‘fair dinkum’. Many boardroom walls are adorned with fancy words that mean nothing…

Culture eats strategy for breakfast…

Culture is simply the values and beliefs that represent the basic tenets or convictions that an organisation holds to be true, our guiding philosophy to help navigate our journey.

Our philosophy directs our effort and energy and provides a ‘framework’ from which to operate. They tell us what’s important and what’s not, providing signposts that light the way. They often provide a competitive advantage around themes such as innovation, service and capability, and point the way when things go awry.

And importantly, they also set your business up to succeed or fail. A great strategy that is not anchored and supported by shared values is doomed to fail. Indeed, your core values are the very glue that holds everything together.

Values operate on the borders of conscious awareness, being deeply engrained, reinforced and rewarded over a long period of time. This explains, in part, why cultural change happens at a glacial pace and the challenge that an organisation faces when making the shift.

A word of warning. Challenging values is tough stuff. It is not for the faint-hearted. It requires you to confront the behaviours that are inconsistent with your values. And then you must decide how you intend to hold each other accountable to those values. So just who are you anyway?

What we do…

We work with boards and CEOs to define exactly, precisely, what they hold as truths for the organisation. The organisation will take on the values that are ‘talked and walked’ by its CEO and the senior team.

This is why we start by working with the CEO their team to ‘test the water’, to ensure that they have clarity, precision and passion around your values, and have agreed on what their ethos actually means. Our work includes:

  • Identifying and refining your core values, and what they look like ‘on the ground’ in terms of specific actions, attitudes and behaviours.

  • Agreeing on ways to make your values ‘live’ on a daily basis.

  • Checking your core processes and systems to ensure that they uphold and are consistent with your core values.

  • Determining specific actions to encourage, nurture and reward your values and philosophy.

  • Identifying implications for your reward systems, including your performance evaluation processes.

  • Identifying how you intend to hold each other to account for your values and how you might confront any transgressions.
